K - 9 Program
The Momence Police Department currently has a Malinois K-9, a type of Belgian Shepherd successfully used in support of the military and law enforcement for many years. Momence’s K-9 “Pete” is assigned to and lives with Patrolman Todd Navratil. Supervision of the K-9 program is directed by Chief Timothy Swanson. The K-9 team has completed an intensive six week training program administered by the Cook County K-9 Training Program. The handler and K-9 are trained in obedience, handler protection, open area searching, and scent detection in preparation for (P.O.S.T.) Peace Officer Standards of Training certification. K-9 Pete is also cross-trained in narcotics detection. The Momence Police Department’s K-9 and handler is (N.A.P.W.D.A.) North American Police Work Dog Association and (IL.P.W.D.A.) Illinois Police Work Dog Association certified which this team recertifies each year. The Momence Police Department K-9 Team also participates in public demonstrations and visit schools regularly to promote drug awareness. This team is assigned to the Patrol Division and is called upon to assist in locating and apprehending fleeing criminals, search vehicles for hidden narcotics, narcotic related search warrants, and assist local, state, and federal agencies.
